The ABCs of a Successful Migration: Execute Like A Boss.

Whether you’re implementing a new system or upgrading to take advantage of advanced functionality, proper planning is the crux of a successful migration. Proper planning and putting the right processes in place can ensure a hiccup-free migration and positive user experience.

While many organizations focus on technical changes, migrations are complex, and impact processes and people. Working with an experienced partner can help minimize or eliminate disruption and downtime.

To execute an easy and successful migration strategy, check out these ABCs to ensure you run your program like a boss:

Anticipate challengesMany Infor users either have an upgrade planned or underway. While having the project come in under budget and on time is the typical expectation, setbacks or issues can derail your efforts and prevent you from reaching that goal. Rather than be blindsided, think about potential pitfalls and how they’ll be addressed. For example, many organizations fail to plan adequate testing time. Consider automating the testing process to ensure it is repeatable, requires fewer resources and takes less time. It’s also important to think about how technology changes impact people and processes – not just systems. Not preparing users for changes they’ll encounter or migrating bad processes rather than creating good ones that address the needs of the business can result in poor user experience and adoption.

Bring together the right resources – Migrations happen infrequently, so many organizations don’t have the internal expertise or bandwidth necessary to manage or navigate change. Assembling the right internal team and leveraging external resources can fill those gaps and ensure expertise is available where and when you need it. External partners often see things that may not be apparent to internal staff or can recommend best practices based on other client engagements. Clearly defining roles and responsibilities and creating shared understanding of how the system will be developed, tested and deployed can support a successful implementation and post go-live transformation.

Communicate, communicate and communicate some more – When upgrading software, some system features may feel familiar, but others are radically different. Even the most tech-savvy users may be resistant to change. To ease the transition, prepare users by arming them with information and good change management strategies. For example, developing materials such as a “How do I?” FAQ or hosting town hall meetings can help users understand how changes impact them and ease the leap from the old system to a new one.
